Emerald cut was first developed for cutting emerald gemstones, since most emeralds contain numerous inclusions which make emeralds vulnerable to breakage. Emerald cut diamonds are rectangular with beveled corners. Unlike other cutting styles which create triangular shaped facets, this kind of stepped cut creates elongated facets. As a result, emerald cut diamonds sparkle the least and their inclusions and color weakness are also more evident to the naked eye. However they tend to have more dramatic and broader flashes of light, and highly attractive for its quiet elegance. When you select an emerald cut diamond, you should be very strict with its quality, especially its clarity, because it is the shape which was created to show off its clarity better than any other shape. Emerald cut diamonds can vary greatly in their length-to-width ratio. The traditionally accepted ratio for emerald cut diamonds is 1.35 : 1 to 1.65 : 1.
